Pentax 67 SMC Takumar 400mm f/4 ED [IF]

Summary

The SMC Pentax-M★ 67 400mm f/4 ED [IF] is the final and most advanced 400mm telephoto lens designed for the Pentax 6×7 medium format system, introduced in 1986 and produced until the system’s discontinuation in the early 2000s. It replaced the earlier Takumar and SMC 400mm f/4 designs with a completely new optical formula, incorporating ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and internal focusing (IF)—a major leap in both performance and usability. Optically, it features a 9-element - 9-group design with Super Multi-Coating (SMC) and a 9-blade automatic diaphragm. The lens stops down to f/45, focuses as close as 2.8 meters, and delivers a 0.01× magnification ratio. It uses rear-mounted 67mm drop-in filters, weighs a hefty 3.7kg, and measures 132.5 × 305mm. It includes a built-in rotating hood, removable rear filter holder, tripod collar, and strap lugs for easier handling. The lens ships in a dedicated metal trunk and was often paired with a padded leather hood cover and optional CPL 67 polarizer*.
