Asahi Optical Company’s earliest Takumar lenses feature simple coatings with relatively low contrast low flare resistance. More advanced coatings — but still ‘single coat’ — arrived with Super Takumar lenses that boast stronger contrast and brighter images. These Super Takumars probably have the strongest fan support of the vintage Pentax lenses — they provide naturally warm images and expressive flares. The advanced single coatings gave way to far more advanced multi-coatings and new naming: SMC Takumars (Super Multi Coating) before finally just being called Pentax SMC. We rehouse an increasing number of these wonderful lenses. Most sets will include a combination of Takumar and Super Takumar focal lengths and a variety of the coating approaches that Asahi took over the years.
